Grad season is upon us. People are suiting up left, right and centre; careers expos cramming the calendar and students are frantically planning their career.
Fear not, though – there are resources to help.
Monash Careers Festival and Careers Expo
Monash is holding their Careers Festival from 29th February to 11th March 2016 – a two week program jam-packed with activities. Forefront of these activities is the Monash Careers Expo, on Tuesday 8th March, with 75+ organisations on campus for you to pick their brains and pick freebies.
But…what about the Science careers section?
The Careers Festival and Expo are predominately aimed at the Business, Commerce and Engineering kiddos. But what about the Science kids – the ones who study chemistry and genetics and immunology and environmental science?
You may think it’s a lost hope, but it’s not. Science opportunities are out there – we just have to look a little harder to find the gems we’re looking for.
Monash Science Industry Placement Program
This is an awesome program for science placements with real industries, being at the company for up to 80 hours. I was placed at an international chemistry company, and it was a fantastic insight into the industry and working with real chemists and chemical engineers. There’s always placements being offered – and often not enough students realise this is available!
The Monash SIPP is a voluntary program, and really does give you a sharper edge and experience.
Undergraduate Research Opportunities Progam
UROP is a unique and highly competitive scheme providing undergraduate students with first-hand experience of research in the biomedical sciences, through paid casual employment in research teams.
Note: you get paid!!
UROP is looking for:
- Students interested in a career in biomedical research
- Students studying mathematics or statistics (knowledge of biology not required)
- Students with strong skills in computer programming/computer science (knowledge of biology not required)
- Students studying biomedical/electrical/software engineering (knowledge of biology not required)
- Students interested in clinical research
