WHY HONOURS?
Honours will give you a competitive advantage in your career. Most importantly, Honours will give you the first big chance to ‘stretch your legs’ on your very own project. It will also give you an excellent preparation for a higher degree by research (research master’s, or the PhD) to further consolidate your communication and research skills, hone your project management and problem-solving ability, and make you stand out from the crowd as a future leader in your field.
As an honours student you will work one-on-one with an academic on a research project. Academics are excited about their research and take great pride in mentoring the next generation of scientists.
BASIC COURSE DETAILS
This degree aims to provide students with a higher level of experience in independent analysis and research in their chosen field of expertise. This experience has vocational aims, but also provides a preparation for study
by coursework and/or research for the higher degrees of Master of Science or Doctor of Philosophy. The honours course is available in most of the science areas of study offered in the Bachelor of Science pass
degree.
The honours program involves coursework through seminars and a major research project. Depending on the area of specialisation, you can begin in either semester one or semester two in any year. It is normally completed in one year of full-time study. Two years of part-time study may be available in some areas of study.
ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
Successful completion of a Bachelor of Science (or equivalent) with at least distinction average (70 percent) in 24 points of level three units (or equivalent) in the intended honours discipline.
Due to competition for projects and limited places, students may require a higher average to gain entry to an Honours program in some disciplines. Approval for a suitable project and supervisor must be obtained and most schools require you to complete a project preference form. The level three units upon which admission to the Honours program is based must have been completed no more than five years prior to commencement of the
course.
COMBINING HONOURS WITH A DOUBLE DEGREE
You do not need to complete your double degree with the BSc to undertake an Honours program. If you have completed at least 144 points of your studies, including all requirements of your science component, you can apply for entry into Honours.
